Road tax forelectric vehicles
Starting January 1, 2026, owners of electric cars and motorcycles registered in Moldova will pay road tax, just like other drivers.
For electric vehicles, the tax is calculated based on the vehicle's weight, not the engine capacity
How is road tax calculated?
Cars
Calculated based on engine capacity (cc) for combustion engines, or vehicle weight for electric cars.
Motorcycles and mopeds
Fixed tax or based on engine capacity, depending on the vehicle type.
Freight vehicles
Tax calculated based on maximum authorized weight and number of axles.
Buses
Tax calculated based on passenger capacity and the vehicle's destination.

Important information
The tax is paid annually
Road tax is paid for each year and must be valid when the periodic technical inspection (ITP) takes place.
ITP every 2 years ≠ tax every 2 years
Even if your vehicle undergoes the periodic technical inspection once every 2 years, road tax is still paid annually.
Paid the wrong tax?
Pay the correct tax for your vehicle, and to get a refund for an amount paid by mistake, contact the State Fiscal Service.
